COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SORBENT, OIL (PARTICULATE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description (CID) in preference to MIL-S 28600 (YD)
in part.
Abstract. This CID covers oil sorbents for pickup of large oil spills in open areas.
Salient characteristics: The sorbents shall be non-toxic to aquatic life, and shall not pollute waters or shorelines, or react with oil. A plainly printed label shall be attached to the sorbent container warning personnel against possible health hazards.
1. Sieve analysis. The sorbents shall have sieve analysis of not less than 90 + 2 percent retention when 2 g sample is shaken for 5 minutes through mechanical No.100 U.S. Standard Sieve.
2. Oil adsorption ratio. The oil adsorption shall be not less than 12 g of No.2 Fuel Oil per gram of sorbent. The sorbent shall float when saturated and when tested in accordance with ASTM F 726.
3. Fire resistant. The sorbent in its unused dry state shall be rated as resistant to flammability in accordance with ASTM D 2859.
