MIL-M-46862B (MI)
4.5.4.5 Volatile content. The volatile content shall be determined as follows:
a. Specimen size shall be 10 ± 2 grams selected from random areas in the sample.
b. The specimens shall be weighed to the nearest 0.01 gram.
c. Place the specimens in crucibles in a circulating air oven preheated to
149° to 165°C.
d. Allow the specimens to remain in the oven for 15 ± 1 minute.
e. Remove the specimens and place in a desiccator until cooled to room ambient temperature.
f. Reweigh the specimens to the nearest 0.01 gram. g. Calculate the volatile content using the formula:
where:
WO - W1
CV(%) = x 100
WO
CV (%) = Volatile content %
WO = Original specimen weight
W1 = Devolatilized specimen weight
h. Report the individual and average of five specimens. The volatiles content shall be as specified in 3.3.1.
4.5.4.6 Specific gravity. Specific gravity of the material shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 792. A minimum of five specimens shall be tested and the material shall meet the requirements of 3.3.1.
4.5.4.7 Gel time. The gel time shall be determined as follows:
a. Specimens approximately 5 grams in mass shall be selected from random areas in the sample.
b. The specimen shall be placed on a hot plate preheated to 149° to 165°C. c. After 3 to 5 seconds, remove the sample, leaving a small amount of
resin on the surface of the hot plate.
d. Start the stop watch.
