COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SORBENT, OIL (ENCLOSED)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description (CID) in preference to MIL-S-26800 (YD) in part.
Abstract. This CID covers oil sorbents for pickup of small oil spills. The oil sorbent shall be of the following types and classes:
Type I- Boom
Type II- Pillow
Class 1- Reusable
Class 2- Non-reusable
Salient characteristics: The sorbents shall be non-toxic to aquatic life, and shall not pollute waters or shorelines, or react with oil.
1. Tensile strength (cover). The cover material enclosing the sorbent shall have a minimum tensile strength in both principal directions of 11.1 kg per 2.5 percent cm width for type I and 5.5 kg per 2.5 percent cm width for type II, in dry state and after being saturated with oil in accordance with ASTM D 828.
2. Tensile strength (member and fastener). The strength number and fastener of type I sorbent shall have a minimum tensile strength of 272 kg using the Instron Tester or equivalent.
